Wiring an apartment

Dear Lazyweb: we are looking at ways to bring connectivity to all rooms in our new flat, and regular CAT5 cabling proves to be rather complicated (it's an older building).

Thus, before biting the bullet of drilling holes and running wires in the toeboards. I want to check out the alternatives: WLAN and Ethernet-over-mains-power. My experience with both is limited, but I fear high collision rates as well as unreliable throughput for both.

Are you using either successfully? If so, which devices? Or do you have any other thoughts or know of other ways to connect the rooms? Then please let me know by mail!
