Are you nuts? Loading tabs in foreground, so that your reading of the originating pages is interrupted?

:)

I want middle-click on a link in the browser to continue to load in the background. But I can also use middle-click in my terminal to open URLs in the browser. Those I want in the background because then I am usually reading stuff in the terminal, not in the browser.

In Xfce, there is an option (hidden in 4.4) not to raise this newly focused window at all. Saved me from a lot of buggering.

yeah, I’d suggest checking to see whether you can tailor the window manager to get the behaviour you want. — Jon

Set browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground to true in about:config; problem solved.

As noted in the original post, this setting does not fix the problem without side-effects.

Still worse, Iceweasel even switches the virtual desktop to the current when running bts show 12345. (I don’t can click on links in my terminal, so my test case is different.)

I do not see this behaviour with the awesome window manager.
